Walkers of the future enjoy school visit

Thursday, 17 May 2012

Schools and Colleges co-ordinator Allison Troman-Nunes visited The Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth this week to raise awareness of the work of the Peace Hospice and the exciting volunteering and fundraising opportunities it offers.

Sensitive to the potential anxieties of the younger girls, Allison involved volunteers from her audience and used plenty of props to represent the different services offered by the Hospice.

Allison explained, ‘This approach really works with the younger children who particularly warm to Harvey the teddy bear, who is named after the first school I ever visited, Harvey Road Primary School in Croxley Green.’

First to get involved in the special Assembly was Olivia, showing items which represent the difference between a hospital and a hospice.

Next, Grace unveiled props reflecting the wide range of therapies on offer at the Hospice and Allison shared the delightful story of how the Hospice arranged for a horse to be brought to the Hospice garden for the enjoyment of a patient who had always loved horse riding.

Natasha, Maddie and Jessica went on to help Allison explain who the Hospice helps, the role of our 650 volunteers and how we can remember our own special people who have died.

Following Allison’s talk, girls from the senior school were keen to hear more about the ‘Young Friends’ of the Hospice volunteering opportunities and entry to the forth-coming fundraising event, the Starlight Walk.

One student said: ‘I recognise how fortunate I am in many ways and feel it is important to give something back whenever you can. I’m going to get a team together and take part in the Starlight Walk. I wonder if my mum will do it too?’
